Yoga

The San Francisco Bay Club paid tribute to the ancient practice of yoga as no other health club has ever done by building an 11,000-square-foot Mind & Body Center, where students can practice yoga and Pilates, unencumbered by the fast-paced gym atmosphere.

The Mind & Body Center houses four beautiful and spacious yoga studios. We feature unlimited yoga classes, private yoga, and a host of public yoga events—all taught by fabulous teachers. You may also rent our studios for a variety of events, like your own private yoga party or community event.

Workshops, Series, Retreats, and Training

We are committed to providing the best yoga opportunities for both students and teachers. We offer monthly workshops for beginning, intermediate, and advanced practitioners and training programs for Bay Area teachers. We also host periodic yoga retreats and vacations. Our workshops, taught by nationally recognized teachers as well as our own staff, cover such topics back-care, knee-care, yoga for athletes, and yoga transformations.

Check our event schedule for a full description of what's coming up. Also ask to be added to our workshop e-mail list! Contact us at yoga@sfbayclub.com or call our Yoga Director at 415.901.9357.

Yoga Director Jason Crandell

Jason works therapeutically with numerous students, helping individuals manage conditions such as chronic nerve pain, knee- and hip-replacement surgeries, back pain, and emotional challenges. His clear and humorous approach, as well as his “knack for explaining extremely subtle body movements in ways that anyone can understand (Yoga Journal),” will provide you with a new insight to your body and mind.

An apprentice of Rodney Yee, Jason regularly teaches at Yoga Journal conferences, is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Yoga Journal, and was recently named one of the U.S’ “next generation of yoga teachers.” Many of his writings have been translated in international editions of Yoga Journal. Here is some of what his colleagues have to say about his work:

“It is teachers and practitioners like Jason that will take the art of yoga and teaching yoga to its next step.” —Rodney Yee

“His straightforward, no-nonsense approach is balanced by sensitivity and compassion for each student. Whether he’s teaching a group of four or a packed conference room of 75, he has a gift for catering to the needs of each person without losing track of the big picture.” —Andrea Ferretti, Senior Editor of Yoga Journal, excerpted from “The Yoga Journal Makeovers,” February 2007.

Why Yoga?

Born of an ancient Indian tradition, yoga is a deeply inward practice, which seeks to unite the body, mind, and spirit. On a purely physical level, yoga rejuvenates the body and balances the nervous system. On a deeper level, yoga brings clarity to the mind, openness to the heart, and a sense of inner vitality to the whole being. Most American practitioners gravitate toward hatha yoga, the physical practice of postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and relaxation techniques. A daily practice can help you build strong, lean muscles, increase flexibility, improve balance and coordination, manage your stress level, awaken your spirit, and cultivate inner stillness.

No matter what type of yoga you do, you'll want a practice that takes the body through its full range of motion—standing right side up, going upside down, twisting side to side, moving forward and backward—and one that balances movement with stillness, expansion with contraction, effort with relaxation.
