History

A San Francisco Tradition Since 1977

When The San Francisco Bay Club opened in October 1977, 1,500 members were presented with a dynamic, new concept: a high-quality, multi-recreation, co-ed club that catered to the emerging Baby Boomer market. The Club's goal was to be a community unto itself where friendships were forged, professional networks created, and good citizenship fostered—a tradition to which we are still committed today.

Firsts for The Bay Club

The Bay Club was the first downtown, multi-recreation, co-ed club in the country. We are located in what was once a cold storage warehouse and one of the City's first buildings in the Embarcadero/North Beach area. We created the first center for aerobics in the Bay Area and also offered the first downtown shuttle service, which brings members to and from the Financial District and the Club.

During the height of the racquetball craze in the early '80s, The Bay Club offered the best racquetball courts in the City. As squash became increasingly popular in Europe, The Bay Club seized the opportunity to focus on this fast-growing sport and developed the first comprehensive squash program ever offered in a multi-recreation club facility.

First-Class Quality and Service

The Bay Club has always provided high-quality programs and excellent service to our members. For example, we established a standard that requires each personal trainer to be certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) which is internationally recognized as one of the top certifying bodies for fitness professionals. We apply the same high standards to staff specializing in squash, massage, and swim instruction, to name just a few.

As we continue to grow and evolve, The Bay Club will always honor this tradition of quality and service, to give our members the best possible club experience.
